I have a dirty secret. I’ve been decanting Lidl’s own brand port and passing it off as something much more expensive. I nearly came clean a few weeks ago when one of the guests went into some depth about his student habit of buying ‘Cockburns’ Lidl port, but I couldn’t quite do it.
Lidl is still seen as a bit of a joke among many circles, but the truth is it sells a lot of great food at incredible prices. Parmesan at £10/kg and growing herbs for 29p sometimes. Questionable employment policies and food sourcing aside, Lidl is a veritable foodie’s paradise!
So the deal is this : I’ll have dinner parties using only Lidl ingredients (within reason), and see if my guests notice. I’ll post the recipes, reactions and throw in some repartee. With any luck I’ll finally have a digital copy of my recipes and will have saved a fortune entertaining oblivious friends and family. Hurrah!
